Dr. Bill’s Guide to Medical Bills & Debt

Medical bills can be confusing, expensive, and difficult for clients to know how to challenge. This guide gives you practical steps and ready-to-use resources to help your clients review bills, question charges, and explore their options.

Start with the bill

Before a client simply pays the amount on a statement, get the details.

Request an itemized bill
Ask the provider for a detailed breakdown of every charge.

Gather the EOB
If insurance was involved, compare the provider bill with the Explanation of Benefits to see how the claim was processed and what the plan says the client owes.

Get the records when needed
Medical records can help determine whether the services billed match the care provided.

Review the charges

Look for anything that doesn't make sense or doesn't match the client's records.

  • Duplicate or unexpected charges

  • Services the client doesn't recognize

  • Differences between the bill and EOB

  • Charges that need clarification

  • Potential billing or coding errors

If something looks wrong, don't assume it is an error. Ask the provider to explain the charge and provide supporting information.

Know your options

After reviewing the bill, clients may have options to reduce, dispute, or manage what they owe.

Financial assistance
Ask the hospital about available assistance and eligibility.

Payment arrangements
Ask about payment plans or other options.

Billing disputes
Question charges that appear incorrect or unclear.

Consumer protections
Certain federal protections may apply, including the No Surprises Act and debt collection rules.
